Itinerary

May 12-13:  With great anticipation this morning, we’ll gather for our flight to Helsinki,  Finland (making one stop along the way).  We’ll arrive in the morning of May 13. It’s important that we stay awake on our arrival day.   One hour from Helsinki is the town of Porvoo – and idyllic old town with narrow cobblestone streets that are lined with charming cafes and boutiques.  We’ll enjoy the winding streets, red wooden warehouses on the river and the impressive cathedral on top of the hill.  We’ll learn the history, give you time for lunch and enjoy time to walk the winding streets.  We will be in Helsinki in the afternoon to check in and rest. A welcome dinner is included tonight.

May 14:  Helsinki is a beautiful city positioned on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland.  This morning a local guide will join us to show us this intriguing city including the bustling the Market Square, Parliament, a beautiful church and much more.  After a fun lunch on the waterfront, we’ll travel through the heavily wooded suburbs and enjoy a session at the Helsinki Temple (the first of six sessions).  We will then transfer to the ferry terminal in Helsinki and board our Viking Line ship for a 15 hour overnight journey to Stockholm, including your private stateroom for sleeping.  Breakfast is included today.

May 15:  The Swedish capital’s beauty is due to its unique setting on fourteen islands between Lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea. Our ferry docks in the morning and all will be on the decks as we sail into this beautiful city.  We’ll transfer to our coach and meet our local guide who will take us on a short walking tour of the old town including the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace. We’ll see some of the old and the new Stockholm. And we’ll give you some time for browsing in the quaint, medieval streets.  In the afternoon, we’ve included admission to one of the most interesting museums in Europe:  The Vasa Museum.  The museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged, the 64-gun warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628.  It is fascinating to see a slice of perfectly preserved life from the early 1600’s!  You’ll have a free evening in the Stockholm area tonight.  Breakfast and museum are included today.

May 16:  This morning we’ll make a visit to Stockholm Temple in Vasterhaninge.  The setting and building are exquisite.  We then head southwest into the stunningly beautiful countryside of interior Sweden. This temple is closed for a three year rennovation. However, we will meet our friend and former Patriarch at the adjacent chapel and enjoy an interesting presentation about the history of our church in Sweden. We’ll then continue our journey.  We’ll enjoy lakes, woods and rolling hills as we travel. We’ll spend a couple hours in the lakeside town of Granna with its famous candy stores and sweeping scenery. Those interested can climb the 200 stairs to the overlook for the stunning area views. We’ll stay in the town of Varnamo tonight. Breakfast is included today.

May 17:  Today we drive an hour and take an enjoyable ferry ride into Denmark. We’ll enjoy views of Hamlet’s Kronborg Castle at Elsinore and a brief tour there upon arrival. Lunch is in the nearby central market.  After checking into our Copenhagen hotel, we’ll have an afternoon session in the Copenhagen Temple.  We’ll share the interesting history before our visit.  We’ll then relax at our hotel and relax this evening.  Breakfast and dinner are included today.

May 18:   We’ll attend Sacrament Meetingn in Copenhagen today. Many of us have Danish ancestors who migrated from Denmark.  The church history in this area is intriguing and inspirational.  We’ll enjoy a guided sightseeing tour which begins at the Church of our Lady where we can see Torvaldsen’s original Christus statue.  We then have a chance to see the Amalienborg Palace,  Castle Rosenborg (surrounded by a beautiful park and rose garden) and of course the famous Little Mermaid. We’ll also enjoy a one hour canal ride showcasing this stately and beautiful city.  We will also see the statue called Amerikakaj representing a young woman that left her country behind to migrate to Zion. This evening you can rest if you’d like, or enjoy an optional visit to Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen’s famous entertainment/amusement park which is a fun place to enjoy some beautiful gardens, short stage acts, get some dinner and observe the local folks.  It is a cultural must in Copenhagen.  Breakfast and local tour included today.

May 19:   We’ll leave at 8:00 today passing through North Zealand driving on the “Queens Scenic Byway” taking us through the unique and pleasant landscapes of interior Denmark. We’ll stop at a charming lighthouse where you can put your toes in the Baltic Sea. It is a VERY scenic spot complete with a ruined 12th century Abbey.   We continue through the tidy towns and wooded vistas bring us to the ferry which takes us across the Fehmarn Belt Strait into Germany. In the early afternoon, we arrive in one of my favorite towns in Europe:  Lubeck, Germany. You’ll have some time for browsing and lunch on your own. A local guide will join us from 3-5 to share some of the interesting history of the town.  Old town Lubeck is a UNESCO World Heritage site, founded in 1143.  It sits on an island surrounded by the Trave River boasting fascinating medieval architecture, narrow lanes and streets, churches and abbeys, merchants’ houses and fortifications – all coming together to form a remarkable gem that you won’t soon forget.  Breakfast and dinner are included today.

May 20:  Today is mostly a travel day, but a pleasant one.  We’ll make our way around Hamburg before continuing across northern Germany and into the Netherlands.  We’ll arrive in Amsterdam in time to enjoy a one hour canal tour showing us the highlights of the city. We then continue to the town of Delft close to the temple.    Breakfast is included today.

May 21:  This morning we’ll enjoy a session at the temple in The Hague which is just a few miles away.  We’ll then return to the hotel to change and check out.  After lunch in the beautiful main square, we’ll have a tour of the nearby Delftware factory.  Famous the world over, this Dutch pottery is made here and the tour is quite interesting.  Then we have one more surprise in store. It’s called Madurodam and is the Netherlands IN MINIATURE. Wait until you see it. After a look around, we’ll have dinner here. We then transfer to the ferry terminal known at the “Hook of Holland” and board our overnight ferry to England.  Again, we sleep in our private rooms during the nine hour crossings.  We arrive in Harwich at 6:30 AM.  Breakfast and dinner are included today.

May 22:  Welcome to England where we’ll spend the rest of our tour.  It’s about a two hour ride into London. A local guide will be waiting for us to give us an interesting tour of London from St. Paul’s to Buckingham Palace (outside), St. James Park Big Ben, the Thames and more. After a later lunch around Harrods, (and a stop at the Hyde Park Visitor’s Center), we’ll make our way out to our hotel which is near the London Temple. After checking in, we’ll enjoy an evening session together in England’s first temple followed by dinner just down the street. It’s a tranquil setting for a beautiful temple.  Breakfast and dinner included today.

May 23:  Today we’ll travel through the countryside of the Midlands into the famous Cotswold villages.   These are some of England’s greatest treasures. We’ll enjoy some time for browsing and lunch in Bourton on the Water. We’ll also make a brief stop in Broadway for a look around. This is England as you pictured it.  Our afternoon drive takes us over to nearby Herefordshire, my favorite part of England.  Upon arrival here, Wilford Woodruff climbed to the top of beautiful Hereford Beacon and called the scene a “grand survey of the works of nature and the power of God”.   The natural beauty of the area cannot be overstated with green, rolling hills as far as the eye can see.  We’ll visit the Benbow Farm where the first baptisms in this area occurred.  The church has purchased a right away to the pond that is still there today.  We’ll also visit the historic Gadfield Elm Chapel which, when built, was the only chapel in the world.  Brigham Young taught here as a missionary in 1840 before there were church buildings in America.  We will stay in Hereford this evening.  Breakfast and dinner are included at the hotel.

May 24:  This morning we will drive three hours north and enjoy a session in the beautiful Preston Temple.  The temple and grounds are magnificent.  This is where the church had its beginnings in England.  When Heber C. Kimball and others arrived in Liverpool, they made their way to Preston.  In the town square was a banner that read “Truth will Prevail”.  The temple now stands as a monument to their faith and efforts.  After our session, we’ll enjoy an English buffet dinner not far from the temple.  Breakfast and dinner are included today.

May 25:  Today is Sunday.  We’ll attend sacrament meeting at a local ward.  After an early lunch, our friend Peter Fagg will join us and show us the incredible church history that started here with baptisms in the River Ribble. We’ll see the sites of Preston and the surrounding area and learn the important history. We will end our day in the scenic town of Downham where we’ll have a farewell dinner at Assheton Arms.  Breakfast and dinner are included today.

May 26: Today we drive about an hour south into Liverpool. The Beatles started here, but that’s not the reason for our visit. There is critical church history that happened here. We’ll see the Vauxhall Chapel where Heber C. Kimball and others preached to overflowing crowds in 1837. We’ll stop at the Maritime Museum on the waterfront where thousands of pioneer saints departed England for their new home. The museum has excellent displays dedicated to the Mormon Pioneers. After an included lunch we’ll drive 45 minutes to spend the afternoon in the medieval town of Chester. The architecture and the antiquity are unique and we’ll spend a the afternoon here. We continue on to Manchester where we stay near the airport.  Breakfast and Lunch included.

May 27:  This morning we transfer to the Manchester Airport for our flight back to the USA.  It’s a travel experience we’ll never forget.   Breakfast included
