We’re going to the Upper Midwest! This exceptional itinerary showcases one of our most interesting and scenic regions in the beauty of autumn. Michigan and Wisconsin put on a lovely fall show in the first half of October. But that’s just icing on the cake. This region is very unique and charming. We’ll fly to Detroit spending time in the German Village of Frankenmuth (Michgan’s most visited town), with its interesting culture and delightful setting. We then continue to Mackinac Island, one of the most peaceful and charming places you’ll ever visit (no cars allowed, only horse and buggy). We visit the Soo Locks in the Upper Peninsula and continue to Door County, Wisconsin, a 50 mile peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan. Famous for its sweeping landscapes, rolling hills and quaint towns, it’s one of the highlights of the trip. Finally, we’ll see some highlights of Milwaukee and Chicago before flying home.
The tour includes all breakfasts and many other meals in some lovely settings. We’ll travel on a luxury motor coach, stay in excellent hotels (including the Lakeview Hotel on the island) and enjoy some unique and memorable activities. If you’re looking for a fall getaway that is full of scenery, culture, history and charm, this one is definitely worth considering. We hope you can join us.
October 3: This morning we’ll fly to Detroit, Michigan arriving in the early afternoon. Our hotel is in the Dearborn area where we’ll have a welcome dinner at the famous and delicious Roman Village Cucina. This place has been serving up home style Italian meals for more than 60 years! D
October 4: Whether you’re a fan of museums or not, you’ll like what’s in store this morning. The Detroit area which is the birthplace of mass production and the automobile. We’ll spend some time at the Henry Ford Museum (with an interesting history of the automobile) and the adjacent Greenfield Village, an outdoor, open air museum dedicated to famous inventors. For example, Edison’s Menlo Park lab, the Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop and many others have been transported here – piece by piece, laid out in a park like setting. If you prefer, you can opt to do a Ford Factory Tour where they make the Ford F150. In the afternoon, we drive 90 minutes to the little town of Frankenmuth, a quaint Bavarian village in Central Michigan which was originally settled by a small group of Germans who came as Christian missionaries. We’ll have some time to browse and enjoy the setting. This is also home to Bronner’s, the world’s LARGEST Christmas Store! Our hotel is the delightful Bavarian Haus or Zehnders. A lovely Chicken Dinner is included tonight at Zehnder’s Restaurant. B, D
October 5: This morning we’ll have some browsing time in Frankenmuth on the quaint Main Street or at the Christmas store. At 11, we’ll depart for Mackinaw City arriving about 2:00. A 20 minute ferry ride takes us to one of the most interesting places in our country: Mackinac Island (pronounced Mak-i-naw). The island is simply one of the most unique, beautiful, and serene settings anywhere. There are no cars, no pollution, no noise, just a magnificent backdrop for our two nights here. We’ll stay at the Lakieview Hotel in the middle of town and across the street from the lake. We’ll have a delicious multi-course dinner in the historic Yankee Rebel Tavern. B, D
October 6: We’ll spend all day on the island today. After breakfast, you’ll be on your own until about 10:30. Lots to do within walking distance. You can browse in the shops, stroll along the lake, see the butterfly house or just relax. At 10:45, a local guide will show us some of the highlights of the island in our horse and carriage. In a matter of minutes, you go form seaside scenes to pine forests to breathtaking overlooks. Most of the island is a state park. The tour ends at the luxurious Grand Hotel where we’ll enjoy the famous Grand Luncheon Buffet. The Grand Hotel was made famous by the movie Somewhere in Time, which was filmed on the island. This may be the most elegant lunch that you ever eat. After lunch, you can explore this hotel and gardens which comprise the largest summer resort hotel in America, with the largest front porch in the world. The views from the wrap-around verandah are breathtaking. You’ll then have the option to shop, visit Fort Maciknac or rest. You’ll have some free time this evening to do what interests you most. There are many special places to visit in our country. Mackinac Island is certainly one of those places. You simply have to see it! B, L
October 7: Today we’ll show you some more sites you probably haven’t seen before. Just an hour away are the interesting Soo Locks in Sault St. Marie in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We’ll ascend the platform and see how these mega freighters are lifted up as they make their way through this critical part of the St. Lawrence Seaway from Lake Huron to Lake Superior. It is educational and very interesting to see. Our drive today takes us along the scenic roads of the Upper Peninsula and into Wisconsin. There are beautiful landscapes as far as the eye can see. By 6:30, we arrive at our hotel in Door County, Wisconsin where we spend two nights. B.
October 8: Welcome to famous Door County. Rolling landscapes, tree colored hills, sweeping views of the sea, manicured farms and dairies, lighthouses and more. It’s a 50 mile peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan and it is truly charming. A local guide will join us as we show you around. Every 10 miles or so, there is another quaint village, and we’ll stop at several of them – one for some browsing, one to get some lunch, etc. Our lunch is at famous Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant (with goats grazing on the natural grass roof). In the early afternoon, we’ll visit the Peninsula State Park and the famous Eagle Bluff Lighthouse (1 of 11 in the county), with a chance to tour inside (if open). All the while enjoying lovely water-side scenery, beautiful rolling hills and a very unique part of our country. B, L
October 9: Today we enjoy a morning drive toward Chicago. We will make an interesting stop in at the Milwaukee Art Museum. We won’t have time to go in and see the exhibits – we stop because of the architecture of the building and its setting on the waterfront (you’ll understand when we visit). We then continue into Chicago for a stroll on the Magnificent Mile followed by some free time for lunch and browsing at Navy Pier. We’ll then enjoy a 75 minute boat ride (departing from Navy Pier) on the Chicago River known as the Architectural Tour. It goes right through the middle of downtown Chicago and is a great way to see and learn about the city. If time permits, we’ll also stop at Millennial Park for a look around. B, D
October 10: A final thing or two to show you this morning before going to the airport for our mid day flight home. B
