July 20: Flight from Salt Lake (or other gateway city) to Seattle or Vancouver. Transfer to the ship in Vancouver which is the beautiful Sapphire Princess.
July 21: Full day cruising toward the protected waterway known as the Inside Passage with lovely views on both sides of the ship. Relax and become familiar with the ship. Enjoy entertainment and delicious cuisine on board.
July 22: Port of Call in Ketchikan which is a wonderful combination of native cultures, pristine beauty and running salmon. Our optional private excursion takes us to a lovely waterfall, wildlife viewing (where we ALWAYS see numerous bald eagles and often a bear), followed by a visit to Saxman Village which showcases the totems of the Klingit tribe. Our local guide will provide the fascinating details.
July 23: Port of Call in Juneau, home to some of Alaska’s most spectacular scenery. Our optional private excursion includes a visit to stunning Mendenhall Glacier followed by a visit to Glacier Gardens. We also offer an excellent Whale Watching option in the afternoon in Auke Bay (whale sightings are guaranteed or it’s free). There is time for both and Juneau is the best place for wales.
July 24: Port of Call in Skagway born to support the rush to the goldfields. Our optional private excursion takes in the highlights of Skagway followed by a trip over White Pass in our private motor coach. Finally, we’ll enjoy a one hour play called the Days of ’98 Revue telling the true story of Soapy Smith, Skagway’s famous con man.
July 25: We’ll spend the entire day cruising in spectacular Glacier Bay National Park. It is one of the highlights of the trip. These are Alaska’s most famous glaciers. Listen closely as glacier calving (large pieces of ice breaking off into the sea) is a common occurrence.
July 26: Scenic cruising in the Northern Gulf. Includes three hours in the famous College Fjords, scenic mountain-flanked fjords named after Ivy League colleges. Continue north in the afternoon.
July 27: Arrive in Whittier. Board Princess’s private domed rail car for our scenic train ride to the charming town of Talkeetna. Stay in the quiet wilderness lodge with full views of Mt. McKinley (weather permitting). Those interested can enjoy the town or take a jet boat ride on the Susitna River (with lovely views of wilderness, wildlife and Mt. McKinley if mother nature cooperates). Remember, it is light until well after 11:00 PM.
July 28: Interesting motor coach ride this morning to Denali National Park (about 3 hours away). In the early afternoon, we’ll board the park buses for an interesting Natural History Tour of Denali National Park with hoped-for views of Mt. McKinley (from the other side and UP CLOSE) and varied wildlife. Those interested can upgrade to a tour that goes deeper into the park (closer to the mountain and more wildlife) We’ll stay this evening in the beautiful Denali Princess Lodge just outside of Denali Park.
July 29: We transfer into Fairbanks this morning. After lunch, we’ll board the Discovery Sternwheeler as it takes us down the Chena River. We’ll see the late Susan Bucher dog camp and her champion dogs (now operated by her husband) and stop at an authentic (and very interesting) Athabascan Village. This activity is a MUST while in Fairbanks. Evening is free (optional salmon bake available).
July 30: Transfer to the Fairbanks Airport for our flight home.
While on land, we stay at the following EXCELLENT lodges:
Talkeetna – Mt. McKinley Wilderness Lodge
Denali – Princess Lodge
Fairbanks – Princess Riverside Lodge or Bear Lodge
All of these lodges can be viewed online at Princesslodges.com. Princess uses these lodges in most cases. If not available, comparable lodges may be substituted.
