Croatia, Montenagro, Slovenia, Austria
Overview

Croatia has made its way onto many bucket lists. And with good reason. There are more UNESCO heritage sites on this tour than I have seen on any other. The well preserved medieval cities on the Adriatic are quite stunning to see. And they are quite close together so you can see quite a lot in a short time. Then there is the NATURAL BEAUTY. I have traveled in every country in Europe and the national parks in Croatia rank at the top of the scenic wonders. That is partly true because it is different beauty than you find in other places. It’s hard to describe: Pools of clear water cascading through the dense foliage as it makes it’s way to the sea – with walking paths that put you right in the heart of it. It is DEFINITELY worth seeing.

And then there is the beauty of Lake Bled, another charming place in the foothills of the Alps. On the little island sits a little church. The setting is quite dramatic. The tour ends in imperial Vienna which is always fun to visit.

AND WE ARE GOING IN AUTUMN TO ENJOY THE CHANGING LEAVES THAT ARE STUNNING IN MANY PARTS OF THIS ITINERARY. Plitvice National Park in the fall is a site you will never forget!

Demand will be heavy for this one. We encourage you to register early. Space is limited to 42 people.

October 7 – Dubrovnik, Croatia: Welcome to Dubrovnik, commonly known as ‘the Pearl of the Adriatic’. Upon arrival, our local guides will meet us and we will transfer to our hotel. You’ll have a bit of time on your own this afternoon to become familiar with your surroundings. This is a VERY interesting country. We begin in the southern most city and work our way north.  This evening, we’ll meet our local tour manager for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Meal: D

October 8: Dubrovnik: Begin discovering this beautiful country with a tour of this historic city. This is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. Original ramparts, watchtowers, and the incredible crystal clear water of the Adriatic Sea provide a perfect backdrop. Stroll through the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town with the local guide as a treasure trove of history is unveiled. Admire the Rector’s Palace and visit the Franciscan Monastery, home to a 14th-century pharmacy. After the tour, the remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the city on your own. Our hotel is well located with easy access to the city. Meal: B

October 9 – Montenegro / Kotor: Today we travel by coach to Montenegro, Europe’s youngest nation and the ‘Jewel of the Mediterranean’. At the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, we will admire the beauty of this longest and deepest fjord in southern Europe. We will visit the charming town of Kotor where a local guide will takes us on a walking tour through the winding streets.  We will see the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, Maritime Museum, numerous palaces, and the Old Square where the atmosphere of this medieval town is evident. We then continue to Budva, a unique walled city on the sea, for a tour with a local guide before the short ferry crossing along the Bay of Kotor and return to Dubrovnik. Meal: B

October 10 – Ston /Orebic / Korčula: Today’s adventure discovers the island of Korčula, birthplace of the legendary explorer Marco Polo. We reach the island by boat departing from Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula. One of the greenest islands in the Adriatic Sea, the name comes from the Greeks, meaning ‘Black Corfu’, for its dark, densely wooded appearance. We will explore the town on a guided walking tour, passing its typical medieval architecture, including towers and clusters of red-roofed houses. En-route back to Dubrovnik, we’ll stop in a cozy village for some fun browsing. We make one final stop in Ston, a medieval gothic town surrounded by fortified walls. We spend our final night in Dubrovnik tonight and dinner is included at the hotel. Meals: B, D

October 11 – Dubrovnik – Trogir – Split: Departing Dubrovnik, we travel to the town of Trogir, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The small, historic center of this medieval town resembles an outdoor museum, and the streets boast magnificent Romanesque churches and beautiful examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. We will see these sights with a local guide during a walking tour. Continue by coach to Split, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Croatia’s grand, 1,700-year-old city. During the guided tour, marvel at its rich culture and Renaissance and Gothic architecture. At the heart of the waterfront is Diocletian’s Palace, the 3rd-century ‘retirement home’ intended for the Roman Emperor of the same name. We will admire its lovely peristyle courtyard, Cathedral of St. Dominus, ancient columns, and Roman belfries. It’s another very interesting place on our journey.  Meal: B

October 12: Krka National Park / Šibenik: We have enjoyed these charming medieval cities. Today we turn our attention to the natural beauty of this country starting in Krka National Park. We will stroll through the park with a local guide and witness magnificent waterfalls, including the famous Skradinski Buk Falls – one of Croatia’s most famous sights. As Europe’s largest waterfall, it consists of a chain of cascades, islands and lakes. The park is rich with a variety of flora and fauna, including sixty species and sub-species of plant life. Departing the national park, we continue to Šibenik, one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic Coast. This charming town boasts impressive monuments dating back to Venetian times, particularly the marble Cathedral of St. James – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Our local guide will take us on an interesting walking tour.  We then return to Split for dinner at a local restaurant. Meals: B, D

October 13: Split – Plitvice: This will be one of your favorite days of the trip – and one of your most memorable days in all of Europe.  After breakfast, we depart by coach for the breathtaking scenery of Plitvice Lakes National Park, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have your camera ready!  The scenery of this natural wonder is spectacular, with 16-terraced lakes, descending 300 feet in 4 miles, surrounded by thickly wooded mountains and lush vegetation. It’s impossible to describe and you have to see it to believe it. Truly, it is one of the most beautiful places I have seen (and I’ve seen a lot of beautiful places). You’ll also have some free time to explore before we continue to our hotel for check in and dinner. Meals: B, D
